| After leaving university with a degree in Applied Biology, Steve spent 17 years with the Sports Turf Research Institute, Europe’s leading turfgrass agronomy and research organisation, spending 7 years visiting golf clubs in eastern England before moving to Scotland in 1993. Here his work included acting as official agronomist to The R&A for the 1999, 2000 and 2002 Open Championships and the 1999 Walker Cup at Nairn, and he was the Area Manager for Scotland and Ireland before leaving STRI for a full-time role at The R&A.
In May 2003, Steve was appointed to the post of Assistant Director – Golf Course Management at The R&A and is responsible for helping to develop the R&A Golf Course Committee’s programme and enacting its decisions. The Committee’s main objective is to promote and encourage sustainable golf course development and management through the implementation of best practice and this is supported by the best practice website, www.bestcourseforgolf.org, which was launched in 2004.
Steve has travelled widely in his post, mainly in Europe but he has also been to Africa, China and the USA.
