| Jonathan Smith is Chief Executive of Golf Environment Europe – a not for profit organisation established to promote environmental sustainability in golf. He has been actively involved in the European golf environmental field for 12 years, and was one of the founding members of the Technical Working Group of Committed to Green – from which Golf Environment Europe emerged. A geographer, Jonathan has worked both on strategic initiatives and on site, gaining practical experience of both golf course management and development. He has worked as a field adviser to golf clubs and golf developers; coordinated a range of golf / environmental research; contributed to greenkeeper education programmes; and worked with government and environmental agencies on regulatory and support policies for golf. He has written numerous articles and papers on golf and the environment, and has organised and presented at a wide range of industry events across Europe. Prior to his current position Jonathan was Project Manager of the Scottish Golf Environment Group, a partnership of golfing, government and environmental organisations. Before that he worked as a Countryside Ranger in estate management, nature conservation and environmental education. He is a full member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. Married with three daughters, he still manages to play an occasional round. |
